SACRUM is a representative of the Podkarpacie polish heavy music scene creating its compositions in the canons of death-doom metal, based on a hard guitar sound, average tempos and the characteristic climate of the keyboard sound, which has gone its own, intentionally chosen style inspired by the art of bands such as Opeth, In Flames, Moonspell, Amorphis, Therion… In spite the existence of a few years, the band still tries to catch the appropriate level of popularity, treating its art as a kind of good fun and a steppingstone from the dullness of day without any ideology, symbol or a message in the lyrics. SACRUM has survived, since the early 1990s, as one of the many polish native formations not taking care about any of the changing moods and fashions in the music business, at the same time increasing the level of the offered music with every next record.
SACRUM comes into existence in September, 1991 in Gorlice, with the first lineup being: Krzysztof Cyculeńko - guitar, Piotr Szkiluk - guitar, Bartek Jurys - bass, Pawel Szarowicz - drums and Robert Gancarczyk - vocals. Most of the members played in other local groups. The first gig takes place in May, 1992 during the fest of the city Gorlice, then in December the band makes its first demo cassette "Condemned For Pain". Since then, SACRUM starts the long and toilsome trip through the scenes of Poland. The bands goes under the wings of Centre of Culture in Gorlice and during the summer holidays 1994 SACRUM realizes another demo cassette "In Articulo Mortis". Short after that, the decision has been made to widen the sound with keyboards which sets the band in the right direction of the unique style.
In the beginning of 1995, an idea of recording the debut occurs. New musicians appear n the band, and in September, demo tapes are sent to many potential publishers in the country. In October, SACRUM is offered to do a tour with a Swedish band Lake Of Tears, but only one gig puts through. In December, the band comes into the SPAART Studio in Rzeszów to realize its first album "Res Sacra Miser" - 40 minutes of gloomy and climatic music. After several well-received gigs in a row, the band is offered a proposition to publish their debut.
In May, 1996 the contract is signed with Morbid Noise and in September the material has its place on store shelves in a form of a cassette. Due to a professional promotion, SACRUM is a guest of many radio stations and magazines. The album is well sold and receives many positive reviews which results in a number of the debut promotional gigs (with Vader, Cryptic Tales, Neolith, Devilyn, Lux Occulta, Sparagmos, Cemetery Of Scream) along with changes in the lineup. Then, the first album is published in the West in a CD format.
SACRUM comes into the SPAART studio again to realize a mini-album called "The Symbol" in spring 1997. This experimental material is published by a German company Awaken Rec., which comprises three new compositions and a cover. The record appears in the west in a limited edition in September. Unfortunately, due to an illness of the drummer, the band fails to do a promotional tour in Germany.
The year of 1998 is other changes in the lineup and preparation to the next full album. At the end of the year, nine brand new songs are prepared and the band enters the SPAART studio again to record the long-awaited "Drastic Reality". A Dutch Shiver Rec. offers a contract, but finally the band finally decides to publish their new album under the wings of Morbid Noise. October of 1999 is the time when the album appears. Since that moment, SACRUM does a series of gigs promoting "DR" (e.g. Metal Is The Law Party, Resovian Juvenilia, Epicentrum #1 (2000), IX Castle Party (2001). During the last one, there was the premiere of the remastered edition of the first album in the CD format (Sound Of Decay Rec.).
The years of 2002-2003 were lost due to limitations connected with professional work of the members of the band and going away. The band only to rehearse sporadically and tried to find the proper way to continue. The situations changes considerably at the beginning of 2004, and after another change in the lineup the band comes back under the protection of Centre Of Culture in Gorlice, and begins to rehearse and create new songs. In February, 2005 SACRUM enters SPAART studio once more to record the album. After the work immeasurably spread in time, the record was finished in February, 2006 and the band began searching of the publisher. The best offer is given by Empire Records. The contract is finally signed with presently the best company in Poland. The album is going to be released at the beginning of September. "Darkstricken" comprises 10 dark and climatic compositions. The present lin-up is: Olaf Rozanski - vocal, Krzysztof Siryk - guitar, Maciej Mierzwa - guitar, Lukasz Forystek - bass, Mariusz Szostek - keyboards, Pawel Szarowicz - drums.
After publishing of the new album the band is going to come back to promote its music by concerts soon.
